NM Film News - NM Director Takes Award-Winning Film to SFIFF view website
Local filmmaker Alejandro Montoya Marin's award-winning film Monday makes its Santa Fe debut at the Santa Fe Independent Film Festival (SFIFF). The action-comedy follows Jim as he gets fired and dumped and then staggers into the midst of a ruthless cartel war.
Monday was born as part of director Robert Rodriguez's "Rebel Without a Crew: The Series" on the El Rey Network. Montoya Marin was one of just five filmmakers selected from around the country by the famed director of El Mariachi, From Dusk Till Dawn and Sin City, to shoot and edit his first full length feature film within 14 days on a $7000 budget.
When asked about the cost and the time constraints that he faced, Montoya Marin shared: "I learned to be more patient, to think on my feet and to always count on that gut feeling to guide you. Adaptation is the key to being on set. Stop listening to people who just talk, if you wanna do it. Just do it."
Montoya Marin also expressed some of the invaluable advice that he received from acclaimed director Robert Rodriguez: "To confront fear. To edit in your head and to challenge yourself. Don't defeat yourself before beginning, try it, try it again. Never say never."
Monday is well-executed and a dynamic film that will leave you wondering what Tuesday will bring. Montoya Marin revealed that the anticipated sequel will reunite Monday's cast and it is expected to be shot in Albuquerque in 2019.
"I have always believed there is talent in this state and I have been preaching the pool of talent - that resides here ... If you want to have fun and watch an indie film that Hispanic filmmaking legend Robert Rodriguez laughed in and said that he wanted to see more--this is the project for you to see."
The Santa Fe Independent Film Festival (SFIFF) presents Alejandro Montoya Marin's award-winning film Monday on Friday, October 19 at 8pm at the Center for Contemporary Arts (CCA) at The Screen.
SFIFF presents over one hundred independent films, workshops, and events from October 17th-21st, 2018, and it is deemed one of the best film festivals in the country. Over the course of the festival's ten years, SFIFF states they are "most proud of our continued commitment to excellence in cinema."
The nonprofit film festival will present the Lifetime Achievement Award to Academy Award-nominated filmmaker and animator Bill Plympton. Esteemed guests will include Laura Terruso (director, producer, screenwriter, and cinematographer), Daryl Wein (award-winning filmmaker, producer, and actor), Tom Donahue (director, producer, and Emmy nominated documentary filmmaker), Alexandria Bombach (award-winning documentary filmmaker), Raoul Trujillo (director, actor, dancer, and choreographer), and Jordan Fein (opera and theatre director).
